Services inspectors offer

A flooring inspector can do many different tasks related to evaluating, documenting, and explaining flooring issues. Here is a practical list:

  • Inspect the overall condition of installed flooring (hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, carpet, etc.).
  • Examine subfloor and site conditions that may contribute to failures (moisture, humidity, temperature, flatness).
  • Identify and document visible defects such as gaps, cupping, crowning, buckling, delamination, loose tiles, or ripples in carpet.
  • Determine whether problems stem from manufacturing defects, installation errors, environmental conditions, or improper maintenance.
  • Take measurements (moisture readings, temperature, relative humidity, floor flatness, plank or tile dimensions).
  • Perform or arrange testing, including destructive testing if necessary, to check what is happening beneath the surface.
  • Review product specifications, installation guidelines, and warranties to compare real-world conditions to required standards.
  • Check compliance with industry standards, building codes, and manufacturer instructions.
  • Inspect both flooring and subflooring to verify claim history and confirm reported issues.
  • Decide if existing flooring can be repaired/salvaged or if it should be replaced.
  • Provide written inspection reports with findings, photos, measurements, and professional opinions.
  • Recommend corrective actions or repair options to owners, contractors, or insurers.
  • Offer pre-installation evaluations of a site to confirm it is ready for new flooring.
  • Monitor and document the installation process (before, during, and after) as a quality-control measure.
  • Help resolve disputes among homeowners, installers, retailers, manufacturers, or insurance companies as an independent third party.
  • Provide expert witness testimony in legal or warranty cases involving flooring failures.
  • Educate homeowners, installers, and salespeople about proper installation methods, product limits, and maintenance practices.
  • Verify whether cleaning and maintenance have followed manufacturer and industry recommendations.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections to confirm that recommended repairs were completed correctly.

Floor covering services (including, but not limited to, those listed ABOVE) are offered by NICFI member inspectors.
The NICFI organization itself does not employ or provide inspectors directly;
these services are independently offered by our members.
